News34th All India Golden Jubilee Basketball Tournament 27-04-2023

Welham Boys’ School hosted the 34th All India Golden Jubilee Basketball Tournament from April 24-27, 2023. This tournament has a rich history as it was inaugurated in 1987, the year Welham Boys’ celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
 
This year, the tournament witnessed 12 teams from some of the best schools in India competing for the coveted trophy. These included The Doon School Dehradun, PPS Nabha, La Martiniere for Boys (Kolkata), Mayo College Ajmer, The Daly College Indore, SelaQui International School Dehradun, The Asian School Dehradun, The Shri Ram Centennial School Dehradun, Wynberg Allen School Mussoorie, The Aryan School Dehradun, and the host Welham Boys' School Senior and Junior teams.  The matches were played on a league cum knockout basis, and a total of 19 matches were played during the four-day event.
 
In the finals of the Tournament, The Asian School emerged as the winner against Welham Boys' School. The highest scorers from the tournament were Aaditya from The Asian School with 25 points followed by Shrey Sai Vats from Welham Boys’ School  with 23 points.
 
Shrey Sai Vats from Welham Boys’ School was also awarded the Most Valuable Player title for his outstanding performance on the court, while Kartik from the Asian School was recognized as the Most Promising Player. 
 
The closing ceremony was presided over by Mr. Riyazuddin, a former basketball player who has represented India in several international basketball events.

Welham Boys’ School started life as Welham Preparatory School way back in 1937, when Ms. Oliphant invested her humble capital and started the School in a rented building, which she called White House. Later, she rented another building Bethany that today is our dining hall.
