National Science Day Celebrations

On the 4th of February, 2017, the Department of Sciences took the initiative to bring students together to celebrate the growing influence of Science and technology in the lives of the specially-abled people. National Science Day is celebrated ever year on the February 28th to honour the recognition given to Dr CV Raman for the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’.

The day’s proceedings began with the students of the National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH) and the Bajaj Institute for Learning (BIL) for the deaf and dumb participating in the School Assembly in the Activity Centre. The students of NIVH joined the school choir and the students from BIL joined in singing the national anthem in sign language.

The theme for this year’s Science Day celebrations was ‘Science and technology for specially- abled persons”. Two short presentations were shown on how science and technology is being used to enhance the lives of the specially- abled persons.

The students then participated in various activities, like poster making, debates and acting, along with the students of Latika Roy Foundation. A group of students took part in a debating session and expressed their views on the role of heart in their emotions while another group of students displayed their acting skills and showcased the skits they had written on some interesting concepts of science.

A workshop on sign language was also organized to sensitize the students towards people who are not privileged enough to express themselves through speech.

One of the most encouraging activities was conducted by two ex- students from the Bajaj Institute of Learning who taught not only the students from their own institute but also to the partially blind students of NIVH and some boys of Welham Boys’ School, how to make Led bulbs. The environment was buzzing with myriad activities leading to an awareness of how science can be best used to share our strengths and negate our weakness. Every person who was part of this celebration was touched by the spirit of science.
