Oliphant Debates

The Oliphant Memorial Inter-school English Debates, 2017, were held on the 31st of August and 1st of September this year.

The Final Round of the these debates was conducted in the British Parliamentary format on the 1st of September, 2017 at the Activity Center of the Welham Boys’ School, Dehradun. Four teams competed in the British Parliamentary Form of debating: Doon International School as the Opening Government, Welham Girl’s School as Opening Opposition, St. Joseph's Academy as Closing Government and Welham Boys’ School as Closing Opposition.

The topic, "This House will Protect Children from Religious Indoctrination at Birth and Uphold their Right to Determine their Own Religion" was hotly debated by all sides.

The debate was won by Doon International School. The Runner’s Up of the debate was St Joseph’s Academy. Shrishti Nautiyal of Doon International School was adjudged the Best Speaker of the debate. The session was presided over by Mr. Utpal Chatterjee, among the most acclaimed of Indian journalists. Mr. Utpal Chatterjee, who was, until recently, the Honorable Sheriff of Kolkata and its first citizen, has been felicitated with the National Award for the ‘Most Promising Journalist of the Year’ and the ‘Rotary International Vocational Lifetime Award for Excellence in Journalism and Public Service’.
