"The Third Lecture of the Welham Boys’ School Platinum Jubilee Lecture Series on Education was delivered by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, MP,- Old Boy, Class of '52- on Monday, the 10th of September, 2012 at 6:30 PM.
Members of the Board of Governors, Welham Boys’ School, Principals of Welham Boys School, Welham Girls School and St. Georges’ College and Mrs Nayantara Sahgal were amongst those in attendance.
The talk was also attended by students of the Hopetown Girls’ School, St. Joseph Academy and the host, Welham Boys’ School.
Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar is currently a member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, and is a seasoned diplomat, politician, prolific writer and commentator of social and political issues.
After a 26 year career in the Indian Foreign Service, Mr. Aiyar joined politics. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and has served in government as Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sports and Youth Affairs and Development of the North- East Region.
His published works include 'Confessions of a Secular Fundamentalist', 'Remembering Rajiv', 'Knickerwallahs, Silly-Billies and Other Curious Creatures'.
Mr Aiyar spoke with his usual wit, erudition and elegance about the Privileges and Perils of an Elitist Education. Over the course of his prepared remarks, Mr Aiyar drew on his personal experience as well as from general wisdom, to identify the various advantages that children studying at established education enjoy and their moral responsibility to use these advantages and education for the growth and development of the country.
The talk was followed by an intense and thought- provoking question answer session between the speaker, guests, staff and students. The Moderator for this session was Mr Uday Walia- another Old Boy of the School and now a lawyer based in New Delhi.
