78 years of distinction:WBS celebrates Founders’ Day.

Welham Boys' School celebrated its 78th Founders from the 27th to the 29th of November.

In the morning, the renowned author Steven Alter inaugurated the book fair and stressed on the importance of reading books in a student’s life.

The Annual Sports Meet involving the March Past, Athletics track events, and yoga and gymnastics displays began at 2:30 pm in the main field. Many athletes who participated in the numerous events have represented the Uttarakhand State and played at the National level. The District Magistrate Mr Ravinath Raman, Chief Guest for the event congratulated the students for putting up a stupendous performance.. The March Past Cup was bagged by Krishna House for the fifth time in a row.

The Junior School staged Fantastic Mr.Fox on the grand occasion of the 78th Founder’s Day Celebrations on 27th November 2015. In Fantastic Mr. Fox Roald Dahl has created a charismatic hero whose skill and cunning counters the machinations of the three cruel farmers. Anyone who enjoys a story of the little man defeating the bullies will respond positively to this lively story. Roald Dahl is one of the world’s most popular children’s storytellers, and this is one of his most popular stories, filmed in 2009 by Wes Anderson with George Clooney voicing the title role.

The Founders Exhibition which showcases students work in co curricular activities was inaugurated by Ms Pramanik .The highlights of the morning were an MUN session in the LRC gallery, Welham News which showcased movies aired on NDTV channel in the AVR and the Music Factory in the river side lawn. The Old Boys Assembly at 1.10 pm was followed by a lunch for the Silver Jubilee Celebrations for the batch of 1990 was hosted by the Principal Ms Gunmeet Bindra.

On the 28hthe celebrations began with ‘Ensemble’, a fusion orchestra of 90 students performing along with students of Reading Grammar School who performed ‘Cousin Jack’, a Traditional English folk song expressing a miner's desire to leave the appalling conditions of Victorian mining in Cornwall. The boys divided the song into four variations: an instrumental run-through, a tango style, a swing jazz style, before concluding with the original.

WBS welcomed the Chief Guest Mr.Bhaskar Pramanik who is currently the Chairman of Microsoft India, at the formal Founder’s Assembly in the Activity Centre. He congratulated the school on its 78th Founders and advised the students to be proud of their alma mater .. Earlier in the evening, the principal, WBS, Ms. Gunmeet Bindra while reading the annual report of the school, in her inimitable style highlighted the achievements of the school.

Chairman, Board of Governors, WBS Mr. Darshan Singh spoke about the various developments that had taken place in the past year and congratulated the students on their performance. His speech was followed by the address by the School Captain Harshun Mehta who fondly recollected his years at WBS and the enriching experiences that shaped him to be the young man that he is today. Mr.Bhaskar Pramanik praised the meritorious students for attaining a perfect 10 CGPA in their class 10 board examination - Prabhapaar Singh Batra, Akshat Singh, Vikram Vardhan, Sanaz Agarwal, Devesh Tayal, Suraj Kumar, Tarit Kandpaland Aakarsh Agarwal. Dr Anil Wilson’s award was received by Akshat Jain, Ritvik Kuchhal, and Anuj Agarwal. A scholarship of Rs. One Lakh was initiated in the memory of the late Ankush Bansal and Devrath Khichi. The first recipient of the scholarship was Prabhapaar Singh Batra of Class 11.

The formal assembly having concluded, the guests moved to the ‘Theatron’ to witness the Senior School play ‘The Tempest’. The play was directed by Guest Director Mr. Robert Petty. Mr Petty has worked as a theatre practitioner in England for many years, specializing in work with young people. He has also directed school productions in various parts of the world including Spain, France and South America. Staged in the Theatron, the production offered plenty of opportunities for spectacle and featured a wide range of special effects with student stilt-walkers, jugglers, fireworks and a zip wire!

The final day of Founders 2015 saw the much-awaited Fete take the limelight with parents, old boys and students all enjoying themselves in the various games and food stalls. The three day festivities showcased the spirit and ethos of the school as well as the multifarious talents of the Welhamites.
