Basketball Season-2012

The 2012 basketball season turned out to be a very fruitful one for the Welham Boys’ Basketball team. The team participated in four tournaments over a span of twenty days, reaching the finals in all four and winning two!

9th - 14th April : The first tournament was the under-18 Districts hosted by us. With the heroics of many players we made it to the finals of the tournament, the first tournament for the new team. We played the Doon School in the finals. During the course of the match, there was a time when we were trailing by 18 points. Nevertheless, we overcame the deficit and defeated our opponent The Doon School by an overwhelming margin of12 points!

18th - 21st April : The next tournament of the season was the All India Win Mumby Basketball tournament hosted by The Woodstock School. We started the tournament on a high note with great victories over Wynberg Allen, Sherwood, YPS-Patiala, and even The Woodstock School. In the semi-finals, we met The Doon School once again. And like the last time, we overcame them and set up a final clash with Woodstock (who we beat in the group stage). Unfortunately, we lost the title by 5 points.

22nd - 25th April : The third competition of the term was the All India Golden Jubilee Basketball Tournament hosted by our school. This started on the very next day of the conclusion of the Win Mumby Tournament. The team left behind the defeat against The Woodstock School and started off on the road to redemption. The team put up a great show and beat various renowned schools including the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, in the semi-finals. Like the U-18 Districts the final was between Welham Boys’ School and Doon School. The team played some scintillating basketball and for the 3rd time of the season, overcame The Doon School and lifted the All India Golden Jubilee Basketball Tournament trophy. Zoravar Singh Jamwal was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

26th - 29th April : The fourth tournament of the season was the All India Afzal Khan Basketball tournament hosted by The Doon School. This tournament also started without a day’s rest. Brimming with confidence but pulled back by a few injuries and fatigue, the team continued on the path of redemption, brushing aside various teams such as The Woodstock School, Lawrence School Sanawar and even DPS Mathura Road. Like the 3 previous tournaments, once again we reached the finals. But along with the fatigue and injury crises, we went down fighting in the final with DPS Mathura Rd. Vishal Kumar was adjudged the Most Promising Player of the tournament.
