Welham Boys' School hosted two extraordinary events from August 8 to August 10, 2024—WELMUN 2024 and Kamera Obscura 2024—bringing together intellectual discourse and creative expression, leaving an indelible mark on all participants. The events commenced with an inspiring Opening Ceremony, graced by the Chief Guest, Lt. Gen. Kamal Jit Singh, PVSM, AVSM and Bar, whose impactful address on the relevance of the United Nations set a profound tone for the days to come.
WELMUN 2024 quickly moved into its committee sessions, where delegates engaged in passionate debates in committees such as UNHSC, DISEC, ECOSOC, UNHRC, INTERPOL, LOK SABHA, and IPC. Guided by the theme "Concordia Discordiae," students brought diverse perspectives and fervent energy to the discussions. Simultaneously, Kamera Obscura began with a briefing session led by renowned photographer and Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 honoree, Mr. Vicky Roy. The themes "Architecture, Patterns & Symmetry" for photography and "Reality Behind a Smile" for filmmaking spurred students to explore their creativity across the campus.
The following day was a vibrant display of both creative and intellectual prowess. Kamera Obscura participants delivered their final masterpieces, presenting breathtaking photos and films that showcased the incredible skills of the students. WELMUN sessions continued with dynamic and thoughtful debates, further honing the delegates' diplomatic skills. The day culminated in a celebratory atmosphere with a mesmerizing performance by the Welham band, followed by a lively delegate dance and dinner, fostering a spirit of unity and camaraderie among all participants.
As the events drew to a close on August 10, 2024, a profound sense of inspiration and wonder enveloped the participants. The grand finale of Kamera Obscura highlighted the exceptional talent behind the camera, with awards presented to the most outstanding photographers and filmmakers. In the photography category, Sunny Rai from Tashi Namgyal Academy, Gangtok claimed the 1st prize, while Chiraag Bhargava from Welham Boys' School, Dehradun, and Aujas Juneja from Pinegrove School, Subathu secured the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. In the filmmaking competition, Sargun Kaur and Jigisha Sachdeva from Hopetown Girls' School, Dehradun earned 1st place, with Anmol Aswal and Yuvraj Gulati from Welham Boys' School, Dehradun taking the 2nd spot. Manas Keleng and Pradyumn Bhajanka from The Assam Valley School, Balipara secured the 3rd position.
WELMUN delegates continued to engage in stimulating discussions, with The Doon School winning the Best Delegation trophy. The closing ceremony was graced by the Honourable Member of Parliament, Mr. Pushpendra Saroj, an Ex-Welhamite from the batch of 2016 and the youngest MP representing Kaushambi. Mr. Saroj's powerful and inspiring responses to the delegates' questions left a lasting impression.
WELMUN 2024 and Kamera Obscura 2024 were not just events—they were a celebration of intellect, creativity, and camaraderie, leaving an everlasting impact on everyone involved.
